Lives and works in Cairo, Egypt

While Egyptian artist Moataz Nasr is mainly concerned with the cultural processes currently underway in the Muslim world, his work transcends geographical boundaries and explores geopolitical and social developments in Africa at large. The artist’s childhood memories, frustrations and the society in which he evolves all permeate through and fuel his paintings, sculptures, videos and installations.

In 2008, Nasr founded Darb1718, a cultural center dedicated to the promotion of the contemporary Egyptian art scene. Recent solo shows include The Barzakh, (the liminal space), Castel del Monte (2019); Mind the Gap, VOICE gallery, Marrakech (2019); The Mountains, Egypt Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale, Venice (2017). Selected group exhibitions include Havana Biennale 13, Havana (2019); Yinchuan Biennale, Yinchuan (2018); Metropolis: Afriques Capitales, La Villette, Paris (2017); Senses of Time: Video and Film-Based Arts of Africa, LACMA, Los Angeles and National Museum of African Art – Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C. (2017).
