Morran Ben Lahcen is a self-taught artist whose work has moved from graffiti to sculpture and now painting. From a young age his creative drive materialised through drawing, the diversity of nature being a primary inspiration. Through the ‘90s, as Ben Lahcen explored expression through graffiti and was a pioneer for the style in Morocco, he became increasingly interested in connections and intersections between horizontal and vertical lines as a form and concept in which to represent the complexity of human beings: the horizonal representing a man’s life, from concerns to aspirations and the vertical symbolising the human ability to open up spiritually. Moving beyond the strict strait lines and sculpture, Ben Lahcen is now exploring memory and its variations, its entanglements, the perception and apprehension of time, communication and the connection between beings. These themes feed his work from their conception, their composition and to the material used.

Having shown predominantly in Morocco, Ben Lahcen’s most recent solo exhibitions include, Field of Memories, So Art Gallery, Casablanca (2018) and Horizontal, David Bloch Gallery, Marrakech (2014).
