Monteiro, Fabrice

Born 1972 in Namur, Belgium
Lives and works in Dakar, Senegal

Fabrice Monteiro, Watermelon Boy, 2017, From the series, The 8 Mile Wall, Canson Infinity Platine Fibre Rag 310gr, 80 x 80 cm, Edition of 10, Courtesy MAGNIN-A

Arriving at an intersection between photojournalism and fashion photography, Fabrice Monteiro honed his talent for the sensitivity of portraiture with specific relativity to the people of his country and an eco-conscious concern for the local environment. His portraiture balances a rich multiculturalism with artistic traditions. A recent series, The Prophecy, channels his concern for environmental issues and pollution caused by urban metropolises. Dakar and Senegal at large are of particular concern, due to its areas of high pollution. The staged subjects of Monteiro’s portraits act as living mythologies, transcending the chaos that surrounds them; their costumes reflecting deterioration and the failure of their heroic attempt to save mankind.

Monteiro’s works have been exhibited widely, including in the touring exhibition Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design (2015–19: Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; CCCB Barcelona; Kunsthal Rotterdam; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; Albuquerque Museum, New Mexico and Blanton Museum of Art, Austin).
