South African-Danish painter Wonga Mancoba was born to Danish sculptor Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1911-1984) and South African painter Ernest Mancoba (1904-2002), who were both founding members of the CoBrA movement. Wonga Mancoba worked with language as a means of inspiration in his paintings and in many ways his works carry on his parents’ tradition. His works are often inspired by historical events that carry personal significance, such as the brutal treatment and forced removals of black South Africans from the Johannesburg suburb of Sophiatown. Visually referencing the drawings of his father Ernest Mancoba, Wonga incorporates his interest in linguistics by adding stylised words to the familiar compositions. Notable exhibitions include EWS, Stevenson, Cape Town (2014); Contemporary African Art, Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen (2014) and Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Ernest Mancoba & Wonga Mancoba, Galerie Mikael Andersen, Copenhagen (2011).
