Ali Maimoun’s medium of choice is coloured sawdust, giving this work a sculptural quality. The condensed surfaces of his paintings are saturated with colour and intricate designs carved out from sawdust paint left to dry. A trained mason, Maimoun initially channelled his creative energy through stone carving before transitioning into painting. Maimoun’s practice is also deeply rooted in and infused with African mythology, with Amazigh-inspired figures prevailing throughout his works and characters entering seemingly trance-like states.
Notable works have been exhibited in shows in Denmark, France and Switzerland. Most recent exhibitions include Esoteric Writings, MACAAL, Marrakech (2018); Marrakech Biennale (2016); Le Maroc Contemporain, L’IMA, Paris (2015) and Artistas Singulares Marroquies, Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, Mallorca (2014).
