Lekleti, Mohamed

Born 1965 in Taza, Morocco
Lives and works in Montpellier, France

Mohamed Lekleti, L’acte, 2019, Mixed media on paper mounted on wood, 75 x 110 cm. Courtesy Loft Art Gallery

Mohamed Lekleti draws upon and subverts the canon of Western art history in his production of large-scale drawings and mixed media works. His drawings on paper offer an insight into the dark and sometimes violent enmeshment of humans and machines within the mechanics of daily life. Creating a visual language rooted in mythology, the figures in his works coil around each other as if in combat and convey a sense of the fractured and fragile existence of the human experience.

Lekleti’s work has been included in Fuir: 10 artistes autour du thème des migrations, Fondation Blachère, Apt (2017–18); Is the Artist a Shaman?, L’Aspirateur Contemporary Art Space, Narbonne; Not New Now: Marrakech Biennale 6, Musée de La Palmeraie, Marrakech (2016) and Visa for a territory, Forteresse de Salses, Salses-le-Château (2013), among others.
