
Using his iphone, the Ethiopian artist Girma Berta synthesises street photography with fine art by making vibrant portraits of the working class inhabitants of his hometown Addis Ababa. Photographed in their daily lives, Berta makes colourful and vibrant artistic series. Born in 1990, this young artist is gaining critical acclaim for his portraits of the in which he cuts out the silhouettes from his pictures and integrates them into bold and colourful digital backgrounds. A graphic designer, painter and self-taught photographer, colours are very important in his work. In the series “Motion”, which will be exhibited for the first time, he delves deep into the soul of buoyant African cities, by representing subjects in motion on motorcycles or mopeds immersed in colourful backgrounds, an allegory for the passage of time emerges.
