fatmi, mounirGoodman Gallery

Born 1970 in Tangier, Morocco
Lives and works between Paris and Lille, France and Tangier, Morocco

mounir fatmi, The Blind Man, 2015, Pigment print on fine art paper, 69 x 49.5 cm, 77 x 56.5 x 3.5 cm (framed), STD 2/5. Courtesy Goodman Gallery

mounir fatmi’s practice sees the artist construct visual spaces and linguistic games. His work negotiates the desecration of religious objects, deconstruction and the end of dogmas and ideologies. He is particularly interested in the idea of the death of consumption. His interest in obsolescence extends not only to consumer items but to “dead” language(s) and political movements. Working across videos, installations, drawings, paintings and sculptures, fatmi addresses the current events of our time, and speaks to those whose lives are affected by specific events and revealing its structure offering a new critical perspective which refuses to be blinded by convention. fatmi’s recent exhibitions include The Absence of Paths, Venice Biennale (2017); Al Musiqa, Philarmonie de Paris – Cité de la Musique, Paris; Newwar. It’s Just a Game?, Bandjoun Station, Bandjoun (2018). His work is held in collections including the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha; and the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
