Regragui Bouslai is a poet and naïve visual storyteller who sources his inspiration from Morocco’s oral tradition and landscape. From olive and argan trees to wild flowers and animals, Bouslai transposes the scenery of his native Chiadma, located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, onto the canvas, creating uplifting and soothing pastoral scenes of countryside bliss. The eye imagery is also prevalent in his work, warding off any malevolent glare or ‘evil eye’ that would disturb the serenity of this fantasised imaginary. His preferred medium is acrylic on board: ordinarily, Bouslai applies acrylic with paintbrushes, but he also experiments with sticks and weeds, which he uses to create a sgraffito or scratching effect on his works.
Notable works have been exhibited in Denmark, France and Switzerland. Recent exhibitions include Esoteric Writings, MACAAL, Marrakech (2018); Marrakech Biennale (2016) and Artistas Singulares Marroquies, Sa Bassa Blanca Museum, Mallorca (2014).
