Abdelmalek Berhiss’ practice is distinguished by his use of dots and lines that transport viewers into a dreamscape where zoomorphic shapes and bestiaries abound. Both enchanting and nightmarish, these elongated characters take shape and overflow onto the frame and seemingly beyond the confines of the stretched canvas. Self-taught, Berhiss has experimented with different mediums and materials, carving sculptures out of thuya roots or painting ceramics atop works on board.
He has been exhibited widely in Europe and Morocco and has most recently participated in Esoteric Writings, MACAAL, Marrakech (2018); Marrakech Biennale (2016); Biennale Internationale de Casablanca (2014 and 2016) and Artistas Singulares Marroquies, Museo Sa Bassa Blanca, Mallorca (2014).
