Alberto PittaHOA Galeria

Born 1961 in Salvador, Bahia, Brasil.
Lives and works in Salvador, Bahia, Brasil

For forty years, Alberto Pitta has been an artist, Carnival master, designer and serigrapher. He is one of the pioneers in the creation of what is now known as Afro Bahian prints, using symbols, tools, clothing and ornaments of the orixás as a source of inspiration. His experience within Candomblé terreiros favours and stimulates artistic creation, thus enabling him to extract the essentials in interpreting codes and symbols. He stands out in the artistic and cultural scene of Bahia, especially with regard to the carnival of the Afro, Afoxés and Indigenous groups in Salvador such Olodum, Filhos de Gandhi and Ilê Ayê, among others, and many collaborations with Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Margareth Menezes and many artists from Bahia’s contemporary musical scene from the Tropicalia movement. Over the last 23 years, Alberto Pitta has also dedicated himself to the production and artistic conception of Cortejo Afro, a carnival block that stands out for the rescue of aesthetic values in Salvador’s carnival, with prints, costumes, props and allegories, bringing art back to the city’s avenues.

His works has been shown at Museu de Arte Moderna da Bahia, Salvador (2017), Museum Für Völkerkunde, Frankfurt (1997), Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo (1990) and Museu da Imagem e do Som, São Paulo (1990).
