Akoto, KwameNil Gallery

Born 1950 in Kumasi, Ghana
Lives and works in Kumasi, Ghana

Kwame Akoto, Mami Wata, 2019, Pigment on canvas, 78 x 78 cm, Courtesy Nil Gallery

Kwame Akoto, also known as Almighty God, is a painter of signs, billboards and advertisements. In his works, text is juxtaposed with images to pay homage to his country, often to compose portraits or to evoke Christian themes. His work cannot be fully understood without first understanding his trajectory. Since his conversion to Christianity, Kwame Akoto has called himself Almighty God. Outside of his career as an artist, he presents himself as a preacher and a healer. He opened his studio in the 1970s where he also welcomes apprentice painters. In the 1980s Akoto began to establish a name for himself in Europe. In 1991, his work was exhibited by Susan Vogel in the exhibition Africa Explores: 20th Century African Art, at the Center of African Art, New York. In 2006, he organized a large solo exhibition in Ghana at the Alliance Française, Accra. In addition, he participates in numerous group exhibitions in Europe and the United States.
