Adewale, Alimi

Born 1974 in Ilorin, Nigeria
Lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria

Alimi Adewale is a painter and sculptor whose work examines the complex issues that face the lives of people in his Nigerian community. Imbued with their own mortality, his sculptures are an articulation of long-standing traditional African sculpture and experimental contemporary art. Incorporating elements of minimalism, expressionism, and abstraction, Alimi creates an œuvre that is distinctly current, and as witty as it is macabre. He challenges accepted belief systems in and about Nigeria.

Adewale has participated in numerous residencies including Konstepidemin, Gothenburg (2016) and MILIKI, Lagos (2017). Recent exhibitions include Butterflies over the City, OM’s Flat, Lagos (2016) and Anonymous, Ebunoluwa Foundation, Lagos (2012).
