Lives and works in Cotonou, Benin
Also known as Francis Nicaise Tchiakpe, Tchif is a mutli-disciplinary artist, poet and writer. His paintings reveal the physical relationship between the artist and material. Pigments are thrown on the canvas, creating an explosion of colours and generating cartographies of organic landscapes. His works are both a tribute to an ancestral land and an invitation to travel a world without borders. Differently, his series of self-portraits invite a more intimate exploration. Based on medical images of his face and skull, Tchif applies layers of colours and resin. Echoing Andy Warhol's screenprints, these works open questions of identity and skin colour: under the black skin of the face, the skeleton and its white bones are revealed. Tchif's works have been exhibited internationally and can be found in the collections of various museums and private homes.
