Lives and works in Cotonou, Benin
Prince Toffa is multi-disciplinary artist, working with painting, costume design and performance. In his paintings, he mainly creates portraits with scarified faces - scarifications that reveal the castes and the social orders of the subjects. However, it is undoubtedly in his sculptures and his performances that his personality and his creativity express themselves with the most force and daring. Prince Toffa trained as stylist and costume designer, which allowed him to master notions of proportion and knowledge of body movements. He create costumes from recovered objects: cans, goblets, wire, bags, plastic bags, etc. and gives them life through performances. The contrast between the feminine figure of some of his pieces and his athletically masculine body, unsettles our beliefs and transgresses the codes of African patriarchal society.
