Obanubi, Joseph
Born 1994 in Lagos, Nigeria
Lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria
Joseph Obanubi’s work explores questions of identity and fantasy within the context of technology and globalization. His work is a sort of visual bricolage - a (re)construction of different subjects taken from their original context into a new one with their preconceived meanings replaced with a new line of thought. His approach is mostly surreal and Afro-futuristic, providing an alternative way of seeing regular things. He has been featured in many exhibitions including the Native Visual Creative Lab and the 2018 edition of Lagos Photo Festival. He recently won the British Council Big Pitch Arts Showcase. Obanubi's professional projects include Techno Heads (shortlisted finalist for the contemporary African photography prize in 2019), Wrap your minds, Altered Reality and Escapes. He is the 2019 recipient of the British Council Art Prize for Emerging Visual Artist and the 2014 recipient of the University of Lagos Convocation Price for best graduating student in Visual Arts.
