Nkanga, Otobong
Born 1974 in Kano, Nigeria
Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium
Otobong Nkanga’s multidisciplinary practice includes drawing, photography, installation, video and performance. Inspired in equal measure by personal and socio-historical narratives, Nkanga’s works explore ideas around territory and place, natural resources, architecture, cultural and economic exchange, and knowledge production and consumption. Nkanga approaches the contested social and political histories of colonialism – and more particularly, the relationship between Africa and the western world – by examining how raw materials are transported and transformed through a process of exchange and commodification. Nkanga is the 2015 recipient of the Yanghyun Prize. Recent exhibitions include: Carved to Flow, documenta14, Athens (2017); The Encounter that Took a Part of Me, Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham (2016); Bruise and Lustre, M HKA, Antwerp (2015) and Comot your Eyes Make I borrow you Mine, KADIST, Paris.
