Massamba, Gastineau
Born 1973 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo
Lives and works in Paris, France and Brazzaville, Republic of Congo
Gastineau Massamba was trained at the Tsiemé Art School, Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. Sculptor, painter and poet, his work combines painting, performances, writing and installations. For ten years, Massamba abandoned paint for textile threads and invented his own techniques. In thread he questions the human body, current affairs in his country, international geopolitical news and societal issues, exploring taboo, conflicts or polemics. In spite of these heavy themes, his works present a source of hope through coloured threads or floral elements. For Massamba, this hope is the hope of those who leave for a life that they think will be better elsewhere, the hope of those who fight for their ideas and who can’t remain silent watching the world repeating the models of the past and worse. His protean work gives us a chance to see this reality, our reality: rude, real, global. Massamba’s work has been exhibited in Europe and Republic of Congo.
