Gbadebo, Òmó Oba(HRH) Adetomiwa A.
Born in Abeokuta, Nigeria
Lives and works in New York, USA
Ómò Oba Adetomiwa A. Gbadebo was born into three royal families: the Gbadebo royal family of Egba Kingdom and the Ademiluyi family of Ilé-Ifè Kingdom as well as the Oshodi (Tapa) family from Lagos. The visual language of the Yoruba, its sacral connection to spirituality and its rich music history are the roots of Ómò Oba Gbadebo’s inspiration and research. Distancing himself from any artistic movement, he allows ideas to develop on his mind, and then further evolve under the guidance of his spiritual ancestors, Olódùmarè and Ifá philosophy. He is a board member of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’ Artists Exhibition Program (MAEP) and has also directed many artistic programmes focused on African art geared at adults with learning disabilities. His most recent solo show Yorùbá Ronu was held at Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York in 2018. Other solo shows include No Words, Piazza della Signoria, Firenze and Lisabi, Ake Palace, Abeokuta (2017).
