Gabr, Omar
Born 1999 in Cairo, Egypt
Lives and works in Cairo, Egypt
Omar Gabr’s colour palette ranges from solid and vibrant backgrounds to a more muted choice, often working with monochrome, all of which allow him to play with the emotional weight of his paintings. A self-taught artist, Gabr decried a perceived lack of academic opportunities Egypt for the pursuit of art in his native and embarked on a journey of self-discovery. The characters inhabiting his paintings are rendered in a contemporary visual language that holds exceptionally powerful grounds. Downcast and in despair, his characters convey a sense of defeat in the face of their quotidian struggle, mainly expressed through their facial expression. Gabr has participated in many group exhibitions, including the Youth Salon, both in 2016 and 2018 as well as Cairo Salon, among others. His first solo exhibition, The Phase, was held at Easel & Camera Contemporary Gallery, Giza (2018).
