Bouhchichi, M’Barek
Born 1975 in Akka, Morocco
Lives in Tahanaout, Morocco
M’barek Bouhchichi develops his work through a tentative language grounded on the exploration of the limits between inner thoughts and their vocalisation. In his most recent works, he focuses on the history of black Amazigh people in southern Morocco. By shedding light on this community’s practices, Bouhchichi symbolically unsettles the established divisions of space and labour in Morocco. Omar Berrada writes, ‘Bouhchichi samples social observations and converts them into physical forms, which could be called a conceptual materialism. His work displays a belief in matter – earth, soil, wood, metal –, a belief that matter, in its quality of presence and its shape-shiftiness, holds a potential for redemption.’ Notable exhibitions include Le chant des champs, Mu.ZEE, Oostende (2018); Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2018); THROUGH, Aghmat, Marrakech (2018); Document bilingue, MUCEM, Marseille (2017); Le Maroc contemporain, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (2014) and Marrakech Biennale 2014: Where Are We Now?.
