Belmaachi, Ghany
Born 1949 in Marrakech, Morocco
Lives and works in Washington D.C., USA
Ghany Belmaachi paints fleeing silhouettes on large monochromatic areas. His universe is one of light and shadows, inhabited by bicycles and anonymous characters in perpetual movement, often leaping out of the canvas. A long-standing figure on the Moroccan art scene, Belmaachi redefines the boundaries set by the canvas and blurs the limits between the artwork and the real world. Belmaachi earned his doctorate in Aesthetics, Sciences and Technologies of Arts from Paris VIII University in 1992. In a career spanning more than 50 years, Belmaachi has worked with a passion, shared between Morocco, France and the United States. Selected exhibitions include Imagine: exposition retrospective, So Art Gallery, Casablanca (2019); The World as is exhibition, Échange culturel, Marrakech and Raleigh (2018) and Under the Same Sky, Mahler Gallery, Raleigh (2017).
