Xiomara De Oliver examines ideas of belonging to a socio-political framework, articulated through depictions of hybrid worlds and alternate realities. Working within the fabric of painting, she draws on familiar methods of pictorial representation to examine how cultural stereotypes both aid and problematise interpretation.
De Oliver has been exhibited across Europe and the USA. Group exhibitions include Frequency at the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York, USA, in 2005; Open House: Working in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Museum in New York in 2004 and The Siren’s Song at the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts in El Paso, USA in 2007. De Oliver was previously a PS1 Studio Artist in 1999 at MoMA PS1 in New York. Her work is included in several public collections such as The Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawings collection (which was acquired by the MoMA in New York in 2005); the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York; and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary in Vienna, Austria.
