Buhlebezwe Siwani’s work interrogates the patriarchal framing of the black female body and experience within the South African context. As an initiated traditional healer (sangoma), Siwani also uses her artistic practice to delve into religious subjects and the often-perplexing relationship between Christianity and African spirituality. In addition to her independent practice, Siwani is one of the founding members of the collective iQhiya, which was formed as an activist response to the lack of exhibition opportunity and under-representation of black female artists in the South African art world.
Siwani has participated in group exhibitions at Stevenson, Gallery Momo, WHATIFTHEWORLD, SMAC, the Iziko National Gallery and Museum Africa Johannesburg. Notable International exhibitions include documenta 14, Art/Afrique, Foundation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2017); AFRICA. Raccontare un Mondo, PAC, Milan (2017) and Deep Memory, Kalmar Art Museum (2017).
