Simone Leigh’s practice is a continual exploration of Black female subjectivity through object-related media. Informed by her interest in African art, ethnographic research, feminism, and performance, she produces sculpture, videos, and installations.

Leigh has received extensive awards and grants including the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award, in 2013; Creative Capital Grant, in 2012; the LMCC Michael Richards Award, in 2012; and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant for Sculpture, in 2011. Recent exhibitions include The Free People’s Medical Clinic, a project commissioned by Creative Time in 2014; and solo presentations at The Fowler Museum at UCLA in Los Angeles, USA; Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta, USA; and The Kitchen in New York, USA. Group exhibitions have taken place at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston in Houston, Texas; SculptureCenter in Long Island City, NY, USA; l’appartement22 in Rabat, Morocco; and the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, USA, among others. Her work has been featured in publications including Bomb Magazine, Modern Painters, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Small AxE and Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art.
