Onditi’s paintings probe contemporary global issues through the use of experimental, labour-intensive techniques. Filmstrips, prints, transferred images, pared-down layers of pigment, caustic acid and thin layers of oil paint are patched together in meticulous ways to visualise speculative worlds. Onditi’s current works, mainly executed on digital polyester inkjet plate, interrogate current ideological, political and religious tensions in society. Finely etched, yet chaotic patches of colour are counterpointed with darker areas, signifying the precarity and noise of contemporary life and exposing unsettling realities. Onditi’s work is currently on show at African Metropolis: An Imaginary City, MAXXI, Rome, curated by Simon Njami and Elena Motisi. He was one of the artists selected to represent Kenya at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017) and has more recently been exhibited at Dak’Art—Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain (2018).
