Owanto is a British-Gabonese artist whose multidisciplinary practice emerges from a 30-year career exploring a variety of media, including photography, sculpture, painting, video, sound, installation and performative works. Her current Flowers and One Thousand Voices series focus on the female condition, emancipation, and the breaking of silence. Owanto creates a listening platform for women within cultural institutions, introducing a shift in narrative and hegemonic discourse. Her work on this matter reflects on the psychological concept of resilience by exploring the notion of healing, repair, and transformation. Owanto’s work has been exhibited at the Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town; MACAAL, Marrakech, MADRE Museum, Napoli; Lagos Photo Festival, Nigeria, the CAC Málaga, Málaga; Smithsonian National Museum of African Art , Washington D.C. and the Fowler Museum, UCLA, Los Angeles, among other important institutions. In 2009, Owanto represented the Republic of Gabon at the 53rd Venice Biennale.
