Nyamai, Kaloki

Born 1985 in Kitui, Kenya
Lives and works in Nairobi, Kenya

Kaloki Nyamai, Untitled, 2019, Mixed media, 200 x 100 cm. Courtesy Nil Gallery

Kaloki Nyamai’s style is emotionally charged, brutally honest and often political. His use of mixed media including metal, found objects, organic matter, textiles, charcoal, etc., is a testament to the exploration and depth of his oeuvre. Nyamai examines the past and patterns of human behaviour through shared stories and cultural ancestry. Works that are full of symbolism and meaning present the viewer with a polemic about the implications of colonialism, violence, and imperialism. Nyamai is more than an artist of our time; his work represents the shared histories of his ancestors. His artwork is based on intense research and familial documentation, borrowing from the knowledge of his 89-year-old grandmother as a way to look back to the movements and history of his people in Kenya. Group exhibitions include the 2019 edition of OSTRALE—Biennale for Contemporary Art, Dresden; the 2018 Kampala Art Biennale, Kampala and Changing Room, Kuona Trust Art Centre Gallery, Nairobi (2017).
