Sabah Naim is most known for her photographs that, vacillating between tangible reality and a world of fantasy, are inspired by the anonymity of Cairo’s streets and it passers-by. However, within Naim’s embroidery work, we can immediately see the artist’s imprint: her attention to detail and her very subtle reflections about what ‘art’ is. Naim uses embroidery, traditionally associated with women, but twists it and uses it to her own advantage. She fully appropriates this tradition to create something strong, but also beautiful. Having received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Fine Arts from the College of Art Education in Cairo, she later completed her PhD in the same institution. Her works can be found in the permanent collections of the British Museum, London; the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art and the Ministry of Culture, both Cairo.
