Esmaa Mohamoud holds a BFA from Western University (2014) and an MFA from Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) University (2016). Recently, Mohamoud has exhibited in at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Montreal and the University of Michigan’s Institute for the Humanities Gallery, USA. Mohamoud investigates the intangibility of Blackness through issues surrounding Black representation and Black body politics in contemporary spaces. Currently, her work explores material and popular Black culture through the realm of athletics— specifically, basketball and football. With the use of a wide range of materials, from used football helmets and textiles, to concrete and re-purposed chains, Mohamoud creates works which address the ways in which Black bodies navigate spaces as both visible, and at times invisible.
