Roméo Mivekannin applies acrylic and elixir baths to recycled linen sewn into patchworks, which become canvases through the act of painting. By often placing his own face on the Black figures he represents, Mivekannin tackles the anonymized, eroticized or objectified representation of Black people in Western art. In the series Le Modèle noir, he reimagines the great classics of Western art while in his most recent series, Sénégal, he composed renditions of colonial postcards.
Following his carpentry training in Benin, Mivekannin graduated from the National School of Architecture, Toulouse. In 2020, Mivekannin had two solo exhibitions, one at Galerie Eric Dupont, Paris, and another at Galerie Cecile Fakhoury, Abidjan, and he was selected for Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar.
