Miriam Syowia Kyambi is a multi-media artist based in Nairobi. Much of her work dissects and questions perception and memory, examining how the contemporary human experience is influenced by the constructs of history, violence, colonialism, family and sexuality. Fusing contemporary methodologies with a quest for traditional knowledge, Syowia Kyambi engages her viewer in a dynamic process that leaves behind a potent visual impression.
Syowia Kyambi’s recent live art performance and exhibition titled Between Us (2014) critically examined experiences and perceptions of social acceptability. She was included in the touring exhibition Body Talk: Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists curated by Koyo Kouoh, which took place at WIELS in Brussels, Belgium (2015), among other locations. Syowia Kyambi has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and grants, including the Art in Global Health Grant funded by the Wellcome Trust.
