Meriem Bouderbala joins the leading ranks of influential Arab women artists working today. Bouderbala began her formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Aix-en-Provence, France and continued her studies at Chelsea College of Arts in London, UK. Subjects that occupy Bouderbala include the female form, tradition, culture, religion, and chaos. Since 1986, her poignant photographic works have been exhibited widely in France, Tunisia, Portugal, and the USA, including at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Bouderbala has received numerous prizes including the Prix Fondation d’Entreprise Ricard (1998) and in 2010, she was awarded the prestigious title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Notable exhibitions include Dream City 2012, Biennale of Arab Contemporary Art, Tunis and Sfax (2012); Dégagement – Tunisie un an après, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (2012) and Poussières, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris (1987).
