Kure, MarciaPurdy Hicks Gallery

Born in 1970 in Kano, Nigeria. Lives and works in New Jersey, USA

Marcia Kure, Forged of Petals and Steel, 2017, Arches Hot Press, Watercolour paper, 156LB, Mounted with reversible archival conservators’ adhesive on cotton fiber board. 45.7 x 61 cm. Courtesy Purdy Hicks Gallery

Trained at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Marcia Kure has a keen awareness of modern artistic forms and an eye for balancing lyrical simplicity with socio-political insight. Her more recent works in drawing, photomontage and sculpture imagine alternative worlds as a critical response to the postcolonial existential condition. Using techniques of appropriation and photo collage, Kure navigates a range of contemporary material from fashion spreads, classic juvenile literature and African masks to children’s toys, suggesting new orders might emerge through hybridisations of these heterogeneous parts.

Her work has been presented widely including in the exhibition, Body Talk: Feminism, Sexuality and the Body in the Work of Six African Women Artists (2015–16: WIELS Contemporary Art Centre, Brussels; Lunds Konsthall and 49 Nord 6 Est – Frac Lorraine, Metz). Kure was Artist-in-Residence at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London in 2014. Her work has been acquired by the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Hood Museum of Art, Hanover and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
