Maïmouna Guerresi is a photographer, sculptor, video and installation artist. For over twenty years Guerresi’s work has revolved around female empowerment and the bringing together of individuals and cultures in appreciation of a shared humanity beyond psychological, cultural and political borders. She uses recurrent metaphors such as milk, light, the hijab and trees to bring awareness to the vital unifying qualities of feminine archetypes and their healing potential. Through photographs and videos of silent, austere, veiled women in domestic scenes and statuesque repose, her work functions as both metaphor and provocation. The images balance delicate narratives with fluid sequencing and highly rational analyses; women dressed in full monotone and enveloped in striking chadors.

Guerresi’s works have been widely collected and exhibited. Selected exhibitions are Islamic Art Now, Part II: Contemporary Art from the Middle East, LACMA Museum, Los Angeles (2016) and Sacred Dwellings, Stux & Haller Gallery, New York (2016).
