Works and lives in Cape Town, South Africa

Anton Kannemeyer, L is for Liberal Tears, 2017, Ink and acrylic on paper, 43.8 x 50 cm. Courtesy Galerie Ernst Hilger

Anton Kannemeyer is an artist and founding editor of Bitterkomix (1992), a socio-political and satirical comic magazine in South Africa. His work is anti-racist, iconoclastic and critical of all hypocrisy, whether it investigates race, the abuse of power or the failures of liberalism. His works are often brightly coloured large-scale paintings or drawings, influenced by Hergé’s ligne claire technique, emphasising strong, clean lines over crosshatching and shading. Kannemeyer obtained an MA in Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 1997 and lectured at three different universities until he resigned as senior lecturer in 2006. Recent group exhibitions include Taboo, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney (2012); Impressions from South Africa, 1965 to Now, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York (2011); Les Afriques de Papa, l’Espace du Collectif Sadi, Kinshasa (2010); …for those who live in it: Pop culture, politics and strong voices, MU, Eindhoven (2010); Halakasha!, Standard Bank Gallery, Johannesburg; The Graphic Unconscious, Philagrafika, The Print Center, Philadelphia (2010). His book, Pappa in Afrika, won the Best International Graphic Novel award at the Amadora BD Festiva, Portugal (2015).
