Dingwall, Justin

Born in 1983 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa

Justin Dingwall, 'UNSEEN III', 2015, Photographic Giclée print on 100% cotton fine art paper, edition of 10 + 2 A. P, 118.9 x 84.1 cm and 84.1 x 59.4 cm, Courtesy of ARTCO Gallery

With his ongoing project, ‘Albus’, Justin Dingwall seeks to inspire a public debate on the subject of albinism. Often considered taboo within the South African context, people with albinism are frequently discriminated against and subject to superstition and violence. In other areas of the African continent, magical powers are attributed to this people— some are even killed for their much sought-after body parts. Through an intimate perspective, Dingwall works to foreground the myths surrounding albinism. Portraying his subjects in a striking manner, the artist presents a sharp contrast to conventional notions of beauty.

Dingwall achieved a Baccalaureus Technologies in Photography Cum Laude from Tswane University. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at Rooke Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa (2014); Mariane Ibrahim Gallery, Seattle, USA (2014); and Sibisi Gallery, Johannesburg, South Africa (2012), and featured in a number of international group exhibitions. In 2004, he won the Fuji Film Awards for portraiture; his work has been published both locally and internationally.
