Born in Mauritius to African/Indian and European parents, Joël Bigaignon moved to France at the age of 10. His multicultural upbringing manifests in his artwork: this mixture of African, Indian, and European culture instigates conversations surrounding colonialism and its impact on history, people, politics, and religion. Bigaignon’s unconventional use of materials and techniques in his work creates a remarkable tension between control and spontaneity. His inspiration for using collage as a material originates from his fascination with the way houses in Mauritius were isolated in the past.
