Gasteli, Jellel

Born 1958 in Tunis, Tunisia
Lives and works in Tunis, Tunisia

Jellel Gasteli, Barkhanes No.I, 2018, From the series, Barkhanes, Pigment inkjet print on Hahnemühle digital fine art paper, 125 x 125 cm, Edition 3 of 5. Courtesy Selma Feriani Gallery

Jellel Gasteli documents French-Tunisian culture through the photography. In an on-going quest for impressions and encounters, he captures moments throughout his worldly travels, collecting tableaux of intimacy, landscapes, and cultural terrains. Gasteli is perhaps best known for his sequence, Série Blanche (white series). Packing a minimalist serenity, the works unfold as a series of nuanced geometries; shadows gracing the chalky whitewash of a typical Tunisian Medina city. The series was exhibited at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, in 2002, as a solo exhibition.
Other notable exhibitions include The Divine Comedy: Heaven, Hell and Purgatory Revisited, Museum Für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2014) and National Museum of African Art — Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. His work is part of several public collections such as the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, the Institut du Monde Arabe and La Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris; the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York; the Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf; Sindika Dokolo Collection, Luanda and the Tunisian Ministry of Culture, Tunis.
