Jasse, DélioTiwani Contemporary

Born 1980 in Luanda, Angola
Lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal and Milan, Italy

Délio Jasse, Sem Valor - Urgente, 2019, Photographic emulsion on cotton rag paper, with handwritten gold leaf embossing, 130 x 95 cm. Courtesy Tiwani Contemporary

In his photographic work, Délio Jasse often interweaves found images with clues from past lives (found passport photos, family albums) to draw links between photography – in particular the concept of the ‘latent image’ – and memory. Jasse is also known for experimenting with analogue photographic printing processes, including cyanotype, platinum and early printing processes such as ‘Van Dyke Brown’, as well as developing his own printing techniques.

His recent exhibitions include Arquivo Urbano, Tiwani Contemporary, London; The Other Chapter, PhotoEspaña, (2019); La Cite dans le Jour Bleu, DAK’ART – La Biennale de l’Art africain contemporain, Dakar; African Metropolis, An Imaginary City, MAXXI, Rome, Italy (2018); Recent Histories: New Photography from Africa, The Walther Collection Project Space, New York, USA and Neu-Ulm, Germany (2017); That, Around Which the Universe Revolves, SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin, Germany (2017); Afrotopia, Bamako Encounters – 11th edition, Bamako, Mali (2017); International Exhibition, Dak’Art Biennale, Dakar, Senegal (2016). Jasse was one of the three finalists in the BES Photo Prize (2014) and won the Iwalewa Art Award in 2015. His second solo exhibition at Tiwani Contemporary will take place in Spring 2019.
