Caitlin Cherry draws as much from the traditions of art history as from the trailblazing cultural theory authored in this technology-saturated age. Working with an original use of the colour, her representations give off a sense of energy and vibrancy. Her installations often suggest the ability to inflict damage on what could be regarded as bastions of cultural authority, while her subjects seem interested in the distortion of some American cultural obsession and symbols.
The last series of works by the artist features figurative paintings that explore the solarization and inversion effect of LCD monitor technology that occurs with a malfunctioning or tilted screen. This distortion that is furthered in the painting process becomes a metaphor for the overexposure and colonisation of black female bodies that persists in popular culture, music, and pornography.
