Platter, Cameron

Born 1978 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lives and works in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Cameron Platter, Please Don ́t Kill Us, 2013, Pencil crayon on paper, 181 x 238 cm. Courtesy of Galerie Ernst Hilger

Cameron Platter makes stories, pictures and objects that are documents of contemporary morality; exploring a reality stranger than fiction, through fantasy, satire and subculture, using themes appropriated from the universal concerns of sex, love and violence. Platter fills the ordinary and marginal, with incendiary new meaning. Working from everyday experience with subjects overlooked or considered delinquent, sordid and lowbrow, he reconnoitres notions and concepts on the outside fringes of South Africa’s popular culture. Many of his works are parts of on-going series and experiments, results of collaboration with weavers, carvers, ceramists and sound artists. His projects are directed from his kitchen table, a shed in his grandmother’s garden, a backyard in Umlazi. All share the same thematic concerns; concern with societal excess, impermanence, appropriation, death, money, love and loss and the fourth & fifth dimensions. All are always presented with humour and honesty.

Solo exhibitions include U-SAVED-ME, Depart Foundation, Los Angeles (2017); Harvest, Zeitz MOCAA Scheryn Pavilion, Cape Town (2015) and I Saw This, WHATIFTHEWORLD, Cape Town (2014). Selected group exhibitions include Brave New World … 20 Years of Democracy, Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town (2015) and Public Intimacy: Art and Other Ordinary Acts in South Africa, Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts, San Francisco (2014). His work is in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; Frac des Pays de la Loire, Carquefou and the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
