Zaki, Khaled
Born 1964 in Suez, Egypt
Lives between Pietrasanta, Italy and Cairo, Egypt
Known for his pivotal role in shaping modernist sculpture in Egypt, Khaled Zaki’s works, typically in bronze and stone, glide between abstract and figurative forms. Drawing inspiration from Egyptian and Arab culture, his output explores messages of human emotion and expectation with seminal works such as Resurrection (2017), a series inspired by the shrapnel lining the streets of post-revolution Egypt and the social impact of terrorism on his country. Zaki’s first solo exhibition was held at Gezirah Art Center, Cairo, Egypt (2002). He has since been exhibited extensively at international institutions including Safar Khan, Cairo (2002); Gallery Misr, Cairo (2014); Heist, London, UK (2015); and at the 7th Beijing International Biennale (2017). Zaki was selected to represent Egypt at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013). His works can be found in the Egyptian Museum for Modern Art, Cairo; the Egyptian Museum for Modern Sculpture, Aswan; as well as in private collections worldwide. Zaki became the first foreign winner of Italy’s Pietrasanta Painting Prize (1989) and won a competition for the design and execution of a monumental sculpture in Galaa Square, Cairo (2000).
