Tsegaye, Michael
Born in 1975, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Lives and works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
As a fine arts photographer, Michael Tsegaye’s work has an attentive voice in recording and documenting his surroundings. Series such as Future Memories and Chasms of the Soul evince his grasp of change in Addis Ababa and the shifting typography of its urban project. According to the artist, the impetus for Future Memories began as a way of ‘capturing and immortalising what will – or already has – faded into the past.’ The series is on view at the Walther Collection Museum, Neu-Ulm/Burlafingen in an exhibition titled, Recent Histories: Contemporary African Photography and Video Art (2017). Tsegaye received his diploma from Addis Ababa University’s School of Fine Arts and Design in 2002. His work has been featured in numerous publications such as Snap Judgments: New Directions in African Photography, edited by Okwui Enwezor and published by the International Center for Photography, New York (2007). Selected exhibitions include Ankober, Addis Fine Art, Addis Abba (2015–16) and For a Sustainable World, Rencontres de Bamako – Biennale africaine de la photographie, Bamako (2011).
