Usha Seejarim’s practice translates ordinary and domestic objects, such as wooden pegs and brooms into artworks. Her compositions result from repetitive acts of mark-making alluring to themes related to time, chance, space, and displacement. Seejarim received a B-Tech Degree in Fine Art from the University of Johannesburg (1999) and a Master’s Degree in Fine Art at the University of the Witwatersrand (2008), both in Johannesburg. In 2018, Seejarim was the recipient of the prestigious Dak’Art Biennale Sculpture Prize, as part of The Red Hour and was awarded the Tomorrow’s/Today Prize for her installation, Keepers of the Common, at the 2018 Investec Cape Town Art Fair. Most recently, she presented Transgressing Power at SMAC Gallery in Cape Town (2019). Commissions include the public portrait for Nelson Mandela’s funeral in Qunu, South Africa (2013).
