Pedro Pires
Lives & Works in Lisbon, Portugal
Pedro Pires has been exploring dislocated national identity, migration, and human rights for over 10 years. He is concerned with the issues of identity and stereotypes in direct relation to education, history, and institutions, which is an interest that is inspired by his African and European backgrounds. Pires' sculptures incorporate a wide range of media. He deliberately utilises everyday objects to create a contrast between the work and the spaces in which it is exhibited.  His sculptures represent this duality, creating new armour and even new identities. Pires also creates ‘faces’ from metallic elements representing leaves, petals, or flowers used to decorate gates, fences, and other barriers. Pires redefines these metallic elements, using them in relation to the human body. Pedro Pires will be presented by THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE.
