Nestor Da
Born in 1982 in Bingerville, Côte d’Ivoire. Lives and works in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.
As a self-taught photographer, Nestor Da finds inspiration in the materiality of photographs and the infinite possibilities of transforming an image. He works with his own photography and found materials as a starting point, juxtaposing, confronting, painting and overlapping them in order to deconstruct the original. Through the process of assemblage, Da unveils new histories and builds multiple universes within each image. He sources his ideas from his immediate environment and the daily lives of the people he encounters, his intuition and curiosity propelling him to capture unusual shots with startling details. In both 2009 and 2011, Da participated in the Rencontres de Bamako, the African Biennial of Photography in Bamako, Mali. Recipient to several awards and residencies, in 2009 Da received the Fondation Blachère ‘Young Creation’ Prize and undertook a six month residency at the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP) in Arles, France.
