Maya-Inès Touam
Lives & Works in Paris, France
Born in France of Algerian parents, Maya Inès Touam claims the point of view of a granddaughter of emigrants to build her work between the shores of the Mediterranean, revealing an identity both intimate and foreign. She conducts anthropological and dreamlike research, using photographs, drawings, sculptures, personal and symbolic objects. The Franco-Algerian artist and photographer shares her fascination with the history of Western art and presents a narrative in her own image. Trained to become an artist in France, Maya Inès Touam questions the value of inherited heritage and challenges its place in relation to the canon. Touam graduated from les Beaux-arts de Paris in 2013 and in 2017, she received an award from the Alliances Foundation in Morocco. Most recently she exhibited at Arles Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles; Institut des Cultures d'Islam, Paris and Museum of Immigration History, Paris. Maya-Inès Touam will be presented by Les filles du calvaire.
