Masamvu, Misheck
Born in 1980 in Penhalonga, Zimbabwe. Lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe
Misheck Masamvu’s practice encompasses painting, drawing and sculpture. Though his first works were produced in what he acknowledges as ‘the style of realism,’ Masamvu is best known for bold paintings that incorporate avant-garde expressionism. Featuring rough brush strokes and often depicting political tensions within Zimbabwean society, the artist reminds viewers that creative production has a stake in the ways that collective and individual relationships are formed. Masamvu studied at Atelier Delta, Harare and Kunste Akademie, Munich, Germany. He has participated in many exhibitions including the 54th Venice biennale; the Sao Tome Biennale; and the Dakar Biennale. Notable exhibitions are Naked Mind and Shame of Gallery Delta in Harare, Zimbabwe; Epitaph at Blank Projects in Cape Town, South Africa; and the recent one man show Still at Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa.
