Kaleab Abate
Lives & Works in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Through his experimental printmaking practice, Kaleab Abate allows bodily shapes to fragment, and deform into rich, delicate, half-transparent, or patterned layers. Guided by his materials and printmaking patterns, Abate’s compositions evolve intuitively, creating distinct surreal twists. His figures are sculpturesque and seemingly immobile, whilst simultaneously conveying notions of urgency and having a strong presence. Abate’s layering technique is a key process through which he allows audiences to visualise the complex depths of the stories that may or may not live within the bodies he depicts.  Abate graduated from Ale School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa, in 2021 with a focus on printmaking. He has shown in Eastern Voices – Contemporary Artist from East Africa, at Addis Fine Art, London, 2023, INVESTEC Cape Town Art Fair, and African Galleries Now X Artsy. Kaleab Abate will be presented by Afriart Gallery.
